Service Update for Apprentices and Sponsors

Starting April 2, 2025, apprentices and sponsors will receive services differently. STO will be the primary point of contact for apprenticeship and exam services. Key changes are highlighted below.

Certifying Exams

As of April 2, 2025, Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) will handle all certifying exams. Apprentices can register for exams through STO, and information is available on their website about scheduling exams. Their new online system makes it easier for eligible apprentices to schedule their exam at one of STO’s exam locations located in key areas of the province. STO is continuing to add new locations for even greater access to certification exams.

The ministry’s successful pilot program, which provided the opportunity to write exams at locations other than a ministry exam centre, is being adopted by STO and they are currently engaged in these discussions with colleges and other training delivery agents.

Registrations and Completions

From April 2, 2025, STO will manage apprenticeship registrations and completions. The STO Portal lets users access registration applications and manage their apprenticeship information 24/7. Apprentices and employers are able to work with STO to register training agreements and register as sponsors. STO continues to be the point of contact through an apprentice’s progression and completion of their training, with Certificates of Qualification issued by STO.
